Alderâs revelation about Lloyd made no sense. The photo of the dead man I had identified was Lloyd Redmond. I had thoughts of Lloyd on my mind when we pulled into my driveway. My garage door stood wide openâa violation of Harris Arborâs homeownerâs association rules. Depending on how long the door had been open, I would hear about it from one of the board members. Nancyâs Jeep was gone, but Carla had parked her momâs van in the spot behind my car.
I headed into the garage, and Alder followed. The door into my house gaped open too.
âTheyâre air-conditioning the entire neighborhood.â I rushed into the house and did a quick back step, bumping into Alder. My kitchen looked like a real Missouri tornado had touched down, paper strewn all over and the drawers pulled out and flung onto the floor.
Alder placed his hand on my shoulder. âStay here and call 911 on your cell. Tell them to send a car. Iâm going to check around.â
I stared in disbelief as he pulled a small gun from a holster strapped to his ankle. âYouâve had a gun the whole day?â
âShh. Call dispatch.â
I didnât stay put. My house had been ransacked. As soon as Iâd made the call, I caught up with him. He checked the patio door and great room. If Phillip hadnât been here yesterday, I might have been more scared, but this looked like his handiwork. I took a quick glance around to see what he had taken this time.
Alder went up the stairs, and I followed behind, contemplating the fact that heâd worn a gun the whole day and that I never even knew it was there. I didnât know how I felt about being with a man who carried a firearm. I told myself to get over it. It didnât bother me when he was on duty, and it shouldnât bother me when he was off duty. And it felt comforting in an odd way.
An eerie feeling passed over me as I stood in my bedroom watching Alder check the bathroom and closets. This was the first time a man other than Phillip had been in my bedroom. I feared Alder could see a whole new side of me, an intimate, personal sideâone Iâd been suppressing. If Nancy hadnât been strutting her stuff on my front porch when Alder brought me home . . . I shook off the thought and remembered Phillipâs warning. Nancy being out there in her skimpy getup might have saved me from doing something stupid.
My lingerie drawers had been dumped on my bed, for Peteâs sake. My panties, bras, and nighties in plain view. And right on top lay a pair of granny panties. Compared to the rest, they looked like a big old pair of bloomers. I grabbed a pillow and tossed it on the pile. To Alderâs credit, he didnât act like heâd seen them, but I noticed a wicked smile as he passed by to check the other bedrooms.
